APD | Guidebook to outline the transformation of Cambodia into digital economy

PENOM PENH, Dec.13 (APD) -- A German-based Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Cambodia issued a guideline book outlining the transformation of Cambodia into a digital economy by 2025.

The book, composed of 140 pages and called “Economic Transformation in Cambodia and abroad”, was released on Wednesday with the participation from key stakeholders, civil society and government officials in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia.

The book also introduced the Artificial Intelligence development in China, some online platforms in Germany as well as some other key issues of transformation for SMEs.

Robert Hoer, Program Manager for Digitalisation KAS Cambodia, said that his team has been working very hard to collect data, learn about things happening before sharing knowledge to the policy makers and promote the public to know more about the digital world.

Cambodian government is planning to transform itself into a digital economy by 2023, a move to tap the new growth for the economy. According to the latest data from Telecom Regulators of Cambodia (TRC), the number of internet connections in Cambodia has increased to 12.5million by this year, compared with 10.8 million in December 2017 while Facebook account numbered about 7million by this year, with only 4.8 million in 2017.

In 2018 the number of mobile connections in Cambodia has spiked notably to 19.16 million from 18.57 million in 2017, a figure that is still higher than the country’s total population of 16 million people. The use of 2G technology represents about 99 percent of the total population, and 65.8 percent of the total population use 3G technology network; 4G technology (broadband internet) represents only 57 percent with its coverage areas of 12.7 percent in Cambodia, according to TRC.

Presently, Cambodia has more than 37,441 kilometers of fiber cable optic network and has two marine cable optic operating such as Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) and Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1).
