At least 30 people have been hospitalized with eye injuries in the southern Indian state of Telangana, the state health minister said on Friday.

All these people sustained injuries in their eyes during Diwali celebrations Thursday night and had been admitted to the state-run Sarojini Eye Hospital.

"Sarojini Eye Hospital received 30 patients with eye-related injuries since last night," state Health Minister C Laxma Reddy said in a statement.

"Of them, 12 are being treated as in-patients. Six of them are required to undergo surgery," he said, adding that good medical care is being provided to these patients.

India celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, on Thursday. People burst fire crackers to mark the occasion.
