Chinese Ambassador to Poland Liu Guangyuan said on Tuesday that "cooperation in solidarity" is the two countries' best weapon in the fight against COVID-19.

He made the remarks on Twitter after the Polish port city of Gdynia received a shipment of 50,000 medical face masks from Haikou, the capital city of south China's Hainan province, on Saturday.

"I am happy to see mutual help despite the difficulties faced by the citizens of the cities of Haikou and Gdynia," the ambassador tweeted.

"The virus does not respect international borders, and cooperation in solidarity is our best weapon in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic," he added.

"The aid coming from the authorities in Haikou for Gdynia, as well as from other partners, are very valuable to us," local news website Naszemiasto Gdynia cited the town's deputy mayor Bartosz Bartoszewicz as saying.

The shipment is the latest showing of solidarity between the two countries. Before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, Poles organized a charity concert in Warsaw to root for China's hard-hit areas.
