Iranian Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said Tehran's main policy on Syria is to support the Arab state in its campaign against terrorists and foreign pressures, Tehran Times daily reported on Sunday.
Jahangiri made the remarks during a meeting with the visiting Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi in Tehran on Saturday.
Iran believes the only solution to the Syrian issue is a political solution, he said, adding that the Syrian people are entitled to determine their destiny and no one has the right to tell them who should rule the country.
He criticized certain western and regional countries for supporting extremists in Syria, saying that extremist groups are a great danger to the region and the Muslim world.
Jahangiri also lauded the Syrian government's decision to destroy the country's chemical arsenal as a prudent way to avert war against the country, according to Press TV.
For his part, al-Halqi said recent deal between Iran and the world powers in Geneva will help resolve the country's nuclear issue and it will also have positive effect on the Syrian issue.
He voiced Syria's willingness for Iranian companies to participate in his country's reconstruction after the crisis is resolved.
He also expressed hope that his visit to Tehran would pave the way for an increased cooperation between the two countries in diverse areas.
Al-Halqi, who arrived in Iran's capital Tehran on Friday, is expected to meet other Iranian high-ranking officials for talk on mutual ties as well as regional issues including the Syrian crisis
