A Chinese envoy on Thursday called on the international community to provide sufficient funding and material support to the United Nations and continue to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians throughout Syria.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN Wu Haitao said the political, economic and security situation in Syria is complex and the humanitarian situation remains grave.

He added the UN and the Security Council should take a comprehensive and just approach to the humanitarian issue in Syria.

Noting that years of fighting have led to harsh living conditions for syrians unable to buy fuel, food and medicine, Wu said the international community should continue to provide necessary assistance to Syria, and at the same time, efforts should be made to stabilize the economy and ensure the Syrian people's livelihood.

The Syrian government is repairing housing, medical and educational facilities and removing explosive remnants of war in areas where security is relatively stable, Wu said, describing "these efforts are conducive to resolving the humanitarian issue in Syria."

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on Wednesday, at least 21 civilians were reported killed by airstrikes as well as ground-based attacks in two days in the beleaguered governorate in northwest Syria. The airstrikes also damaged educational and medical facilities, including several that were serving as shelters for displaced people.
