Seven Islamic State (IS) militants were killed during an operation in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar on Sunday, the Defense Ministry said on Monday.
"Seven IS fighters were killed and two others detained as a result of a cordon operation and subsequent airstrikes in Achin district of Nangarhar," the ministry said on Twitter.
The district is the stronghold of IS militants in the province, 120 km east of Afghan capital of Kabul.
Afghan forces have beefed up security operations against militants as the war-weary people are facing upsurges in attacks by Taliban and IS militants across the country. However, the militants responded by armed attacks and bombings.
Earlier on Monday, one police officer was killed and another wounded following an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack in Police District 8 of Kandahar city, capital of southern Kandahar province, provincial police spokesman Zia Durrani said.
