An extreme dust storm in China turned the sky red for an entire day before the clouds slowly dissipated. Dust storms commonly originate in hot, dry regions and are caused by strong pressure gradients over large areas. They are usually red in color due to the iron oxide content in the sand, which absorbs blue light and reflects red light.
