Arrest warrant issued for British editor over false report on Malaysian PM

Malaysian police said Tuesday that they have obtained an arrest warrant for Clare Rewcastle Brown, a British editor who was allegedly behind reports against Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Police said in a statement that the arrest warrant was obtained from the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

"We will proceed with the applications to place her on the ASEANPOL wanted list as well as the Interpol Red Notice," it added.

Brown was the founder and editor of Sarawak Report, a blog that published stories against the Malaysian government and officials in the past.

According to local media reports, Brown was wanted by the police for offenses related to making false reports or statements. Malaysian authorities accused her of taking part in a plot to topple Prime Minister Najib.

Sarawak Report and Wall Street Journal reported earlier that some 700 million U.S. dollars from 1MDB, a debt-laden state investment company, had been transferred into Najib's personal account.
