Chinese airline commences in-flight internet service below 3,000 meters

A Chinese airline has commenced a new internet service, making it the first in China to provide in-flight Wi-Fi service below 3,000 meters, according to a China News Service (CNS) report on Saturday.

With the launch of air-to-ground services, passengers can use mobile phones and other portable electronic devices to access the internet from take-off to landing, said the CNS.

The airline, China Southern Airlines (CSA), used to provide internet service when an aircraft is at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. But the service couldn't be enjoyed when the plane is taking off or landing and when passengers have a high demand for internet access.

The airline has upgraded its air-to-ground services on 21 wide-body aircraft as of Friday and has tested the internet.

The CNS said the internet experience is good, but it didn't mention if it comes at a cost, whether it depends on the length of the journey or route and the download speed passengers can expect.
