(THE NEW YORK TIMES) At theScreen Actors GuildAwards on Saturday night, the journalism drama “Spotlight” won the top prize: outstanding performance by a cast.

The film beat out, among other contenders, “The Big Short,” which won the Producers Guild of America’s top prize. Oscar handicappers closely follow the awards handed out by Hollywood’s professional guilds because their membership often overlaps with the Academy’s.

Individual Screen Actors Guild winners includedLeonardo DiCaprio, best actor for “The Revenant,” andBrie Larson, best actress for “Room.”Idris Elba(“Beasts of No Nation”) andAlicia Vikander(“The Danish Girl”) collected trophies in the supporting categories.
