MOFA: Meng Wanzhou's case a 'downright political event'

The case of Huawei's Chief Financial OfficerMeng Wanzhou is a downright political event concocted by the United States, and Canada acted as an accomplice, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Monday.

Zhao made the comments in a press conference addressing Philippine Foreign Secretary Teddy Locsin Jr.'s remarks on Canada's detention of Meng.

The real purpose of this U.S. act is to suppress China's high-tech enterprises and obstruct China's technology development, Zhao said.

He also called Canada's behavior a direct example of detaining a foreign national at will.

China urges Canada to correct its mistakes, release Meng and allow her to return to China safely, the spokesperson said.
