Austrian officials and Internet security authorities held a press conference in Vienna Tuesday to raise awareness over information and communication security as part of the kick-off for the European Cyber Security Month (ECSM).

"People still stick passwords to their monitors or send them via email," said Roland Ledinger from the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Ledinger said awareness over the dangers relating to Internet security must be imparted early, as children as young as eight years old are often already using social media platform Facebook.

"As children learn how to behave in traffic, they must also learn with regard to the Internet," he said, according to a Der Standard newspaper report.

State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery Sonja Stessl said she is pleased Austria is the leading supporter of the European Commission-backed ECSM, almost doubling the number of organizations in the country participating in the campaign over the past year.

Additionally successful efforts have been made to bring youth into the campaign, she added, such as a "Safer Internet in Schools" workshop.

Along with the Internet, people must also be aware of how the use of smartphones can compromise their private life, Stessl said.

Ledinger added that smartphone apps that often ask for special permissions, with many users unaware of what data is gathered and passed on.

Also as part of the ECSM, the Austrian Armed Forces will also hold an exhibition on cyber security and cyber defense. Enditem
